About These Cost Estimates

How We Calculate Costs

Our cost estimates are based on aggregated data from contractor quotes, industry reports, and published cost guides from Angi, HomeAdvisor, and the National Association of Home Builders. Costs are adjusted for regional labor market differences using Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Why Costs Vary

The range between low and high estimates reflects real-world variation in material quality, wall construction complexity, contractor experience level, and local permit requirements. Older homes often require more extensive preparation work, which can push costs toward the higher end.

Getting Accurate Quotes

Always get at least three written quotes from licensed, insured contractors before proceeding. Ask each contractor to itemize labor and materials separately. Be wary of quotes significantly below the low estimate — this often indicates unlicensed work or inferior materials.

Financial Assistance

Many seniors qualify for financial assistance programs that can offset these costs. Ask providers about VA HISA grants (up to $6,800), Medicaid HCBS waivers, state Area Agency on Aging programs, and local nonprofit home repair programs.
